Localized Stress-Enhanced Piezoelectricity of Anisotropic Barium Titanate Nanowires in Piezoelectric Composites for Application in Healthcare Sensors
Yumin Kwon, Yubin Kim, Hoseok Lee, Minjeong Ha
J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2025;38(1):1-7.   Published online January 1, 2025
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.1.1
The search for sustainable and efficient energy conversion technologies is becoming increasingly critical in response to global energy and environmental challenges. Traditional lead-based piezoelectric materials, such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT), have high piezoelectric constant but present significant health problems and environmental risks due to their hazardous metal contaminants. This study addresses these concerns by investigating barium titanate (BTO), a lead-free alternative, and enhancing its performance using anisotropic nanowires (NWs) structures. BTO NWs were synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal method and incorporated into a poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) [P(VDF-TrFE)] matrix to fabricate a piezoelectric composite film. The resulting device demonstrated a notable increase in electrical output compared to devices based on isotropic morphology of BTO nanoparticles, exhibiting enhanced performance. These findings suggest that BTO NWs hold significant promise for applications in flexible and wearable electronics, paving the way for further advancements in sustainable energy technology.

Dielectric Characteristics of (BaCaSr)(TixZr1-x)O3 Dielectric Ceramic with Temperature Compensation Capacitor Characteristics
Yoo Jung Choi, Hong Sun Lee, Jung Rag Yoon
J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2025;38(4):376-382.   Published online July 1, 2025
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.4.4
This study developed a dielectric composition for high-capacitance MLCCs with C0G and U2J temperature compensation characteristics (Class I) under reducing conditions. The potential application of this composition in highpermittivity class I MLCCs was examined. Using (Ba₀.₂₄Ca₀.₁₆Sr₀.₆)(TiₓZr₁₋ₓ)O₃. XRD analysis showed that secondary phases like Sr₂TiO₄ and TiO₂ formed at higher Ti content, affecting the stoichiometric balance. Adjusting the Ti/Zr molar ratio resulted in a dielectric constant of 41.2 ~ 105, a dielectric loss of 0.082 ~ 0.174%, and insulation resistance above 1.6 × 1013 ohms at 25℃. The TCC shifted from C0G to U2J as the Ti/Zr ratio increased, but the composition enabled the design of high-capacitance and high-voltage MLCCs with favorable dielectric and electrical properties.

Effect of Dye Adsorption Time at Constant Temperature on the Photovoltaic Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells
Ba Wi Hwang, Hyung Jin Kim, Byungyou Hong
J Electr Electron Mater 2026;39(4):382-386.
Published online July 1, 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.4.7
Dye adsorption is one of the most time-consuming processes in the fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), typically requiring approximately 24 h at room temperature. In this study, the effect of adsorption temperature and time on photovoltaic performance of DSSCs was investigated in order to reduce processing time and improve device productivity. Nanoporous TiO2 photoelectrodes were immersed in N719 dye solution at 60°C for 3 h, 10 h, 17 h, and 24 h, and their performance was compared with that of cells sensitized at room temperature for 24 h. Photovoltaic characterization under AM 1.5 illumination showed that DSSCs sensitized at 60°C exhibited improved performance compared to those sensitized at room temperature. The device sensitized at 60°C for 3 h showed comparable or higher conversion efficiency than the reference cell sensitized for 24 h at room temperature. The improvement in device performance is attributed to enhanced dye adsorption kinetics resulting from increased reaction rate between the carboxyl groups of N719 dye molecules and hydroxyl groups on the TiO2 surface. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis revealed reduced recombination resistance at the TiO2/dye/electrolyte interface for cells sensitized at elevated temperature. UV–Vis absorption analysis confirmed increased dye loading on the TiO2 surface for the 60°C condition. These results demonstrate that elevated temperature dye adsorption significantly reduces processing time while maintaining photovoltaic performance, providing an effective strategy for improving manufacturing efficiency of DSSCs.

Ahmed Mahfuz Tamim, Youngseo Song, Chang Kyu Jeong
J Electr Electron Mater 2026;39(3):238-246.
Published online May 1, 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.3.2
Metamaterials, as artificially engineered structures with unconventional mechanical and acoustic properties, have recently emerged as a transformative platform for enhancing the capabilities of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) systems. Since the invention of TENG devices, extensive efforts have been devoted to improving charge density, output stability, and overall performance. Conventional performance optimization strategies mainly rely on device-level improvements such as surface chemistry modification, microstructuring, and nanopatterning. However, limited emphasis has been given to system-level development of smart self-powered intelligent systems. The integration of metamaterials into TENG devices opens a new era by enabling frequency-selective localization, mechanical impedance matching, and controllable deformation pathways. These engineered mechanical structures not only improve energy harvesting efficiency but also introduce new functionalities into the system. This review systematically summarizes recent advances in metamaterial-integrated TENG systems across four major application domains: (i) energy harvesting, (ii) acoustic telecommunication and acoustic-to-electric conversion, (iii) self-powered sensing, and (iv) vibration suppression and monitoring. Overall, the integration of metamaterials into TENG systems will pave the way for next-generation sustainable, intelligent, self-powered devices with diverse functionalities.

A Lighting Control Method for Reducing Luminance Deviation in AC-LED Lighting Systems
Dong Won Lee, Byungcheul Kim
J Electr Electron Mater 2026;39(2):193-197.
Published online March 1, 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.2.8
Long lifetime, low power consumption, and environmental friendliness have enabled light-emitting diode (LED) lighting to rapidly replace conventional light sources such as incandescent and fluorescent lamps. In particular, AC-LED lighting systems can be directly powered by commercial alternating current (AC) sources; however, they suffer from significant luminance deviation caused by uneven current distribution among LED light-emitting modules. This paper proposes a lighting control method that improves flicker performance while maintaining lamp brightness and effectively reduces luminance deviation in AC-LED lighting. The proposed method reduces luminance deviation by controlling the lighting order of multiple LED light-emitting modules. Among four LED modules, only the required number of modules is continuously turned on, and the lighting priority alternates between rectification cycles. Specifically, during odd rectification cycles, LED modules are activated sequentially in ascending order (11→12→13→14), whereas during even rectification cycles, they are activated in descending order (14→13→12→11). By alternately applying continuous lighting control with opposite activation orders, the proposed reverse alternating lighting control method equalizes the current distribution among LED modules. As a result, luminance uniformity is improved, electrical stress concentration on specific modules is reduced, and the operational lifetime of the LED modules is extended compared with the conventional fixed-sequence lighting control method.

Electrical Properties Based on Dielectric Layer Thickness for the Optimal Design of BaTiO3-Based X8R MLCCs
Change-ho Lee, Jong Kyu Lee, Jung Rag Yoon
J Electr Electron Mater 2026;39(2):175-182.
Published online March 1, 2026
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2026.39.2.6
This study investigates the effect of dielectric layer thickness on the electrical and reliability characteristics of BaTiO₃- based X8R multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) for automotive applications. MLCCs with 30 dielectric layers and thicknesses ranging from 5 to 30 μm were fabricated, and key parameters―including capacitance, equivalent series resistance (ESR), insulation resistance (IR), breakdown voltage (BDV), DC-bias characteristics, temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC), and ripple current-induced heating―were evaluated. The dielectric constant (~2,000) and sintering shrinkage (~-25%) were nearly independent of thickness, confirming stable microstructure formation. ESR increased with thickness, while normalized BDV (V/μm) decreased due to defect accumulation. IR improved with increasing thickness but dropped sharply above 125℃. Dielectrics thinner than 10 μm exhibited significant capacitance degradation under DC-bias and temperature variation, reflecting strong internal field effects. Ripple-induced heating correlated directly with ESR. These results indicate that, although thinner layers enhance capacitance density, reducing the thickness below 10 μm compromises bias stability and thermal reliability. A minimum dielectric thickness of 10 μm is therefore recommended to achieve an optimal balance between electrical performance and durability in high-reliability X8R MLCCs.

In such systems, MLCCs are critical passive components that must deliver high capacitance, fast transient response, and robust insulation performance under high temperature, voltage, and current density. This review examines the material, structural, and process innovations that underpin MLCC performance in AI applications. Key topics include the development of ultrathin dielectric layers (<0.5 μm), rare-earth doped BaTiO₃-based dielectrics with enhanced DC bias stability, and core-shell microstructures designed for temperature and field resilience. The paper also explores insulation degradation mechanisms―such as vacancydriven conduction and demixing―and advanced reliability assessment methodologies, including HALT, TSDC, and the tipping point framework. Comparisons with automotive-grade MLCCs highlight the unique requirements of AI systems, such as ultraminiaturization, high volumetric efficiency, and ppm-level field failure rates. Finally, the review discusses emerging trends in MLCC technology, including particle engineering, interface stabilization, and advanced lamination techniques, and provides insight into the future direction of capacitor development tailored to AI data center environments.

Nozzle-printing dispensers, which utilize air pulsation as a dispensing principle, operate by transmitting air pressure to the liquid to push a constant amount of liquid. Nozzle printers have the advantage of precisely controlling energy based on liquid properties, such as viscosity and surface tension, enabling the precise application of liquid at specific locations and quantities. This study introduces a printing process sequence using a nozzle printer equipped with a high-resolution vision alignment system. It compares printing patterns according to key process variables (jet pressure, tip height, and travel speed) that affect coating quality. Experimental results showed that a coating standard deviation of 2.14 μm was achieved at a moving speed of 20 mm/s and a nozzle height of 0.2 mm, resulting in the most stable and uniform coating quality. Through these experiments, optimal conditions were identified based on factors such as coating width, uniformity, and presence of discontinuity, and the effects of these conditions on the precision manufacturing process are discussed.

κ-phase Ga₂O₃ is a wide-bandgap semiconductor that has attracted attention for power and optoelectronic device applications. However, its crystal quality and optical properties are highly dependent on the growth temperature, which motivates the need for a systematic study. In this work, κ-Ga₂O₃ thin films were grown on AlN/sapphire templates using mist-CVD at different temperatures. At lower temperatures (400℃), films exhibited incomplete crystallization and partial opacity, whereas higher growth temperatures (500-700℃) produced transparent films with improved properties. The bandgap was found to increase with temperature, consistent with reported values for 600-700℃, and XRD/XRC analysis confirmed that crystal quality improved with higher growth temperature. AFM analysis further revealed reductions in surface roughness and grain size variation at elevated temperatures. These findings indicate that an optimal growth window of 600-700℃ enables high-quality κ-Ga₂O₃ films, with potential implications for integrating this material on other hexagonal substrates such as SiC and GaN.

Multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are essential for high-capacitance, miniaturized, and reliable electronic applications. This study examines the impact of layer stacking on the dielectric and electrical properties of MLCCs using a BaTiO₃-based dielectric with MgO, Mn₃O₄, Yb₂O₃, V₂O5, and (BaCa)SiO₃ glass additives. MLCCs with 10 um-thick dielectric layers and varying Ni electrode layers (10, 30, 50, and 100 layers) were fabricated. The dielectric constant increases significantly up to 30 layers due to compressive stress and sintering densification but it becomes linear beyond 30 layers. Dissipation factor and ESR decrease with higher stacking due to improved sinterability, while breakdown voltage declines exponentially from defect accumulation and thermal stress. Insulation resistance decreases but stabilizes relative to capacitance. C-V results show stress-induced polarization suppression, which reduces the dielectric constant under high voltage. Optimized stacking and sintering conditions are crucial for MIL-PRF-32535 compliant MLCC designs.

Silicon carbon nitride (SiCN) thin films are promising materials for copper diffusion barriers and hybrid bonding in semiconductor processes. Oxidation-resistant films are increasingly critical for realizing high-reliability devices, highlighting the need for process control and property evaluation. In this study, we analyzed the thin film properties as a function of tetramethylsilane (4MS) gas partial pressure ratio (PPR), deposition temperature, and dual-power plasma conditions in a PECVD-based SiCN deposition process. Based on the results, we experimentally demonstrated that the refractive index can be a valid indicator for oxidation resistance evaluation. The application of dual-power plasma conditions was instrumental in enhancing oxidation resistance. Under these conditions, the refractive index reached approximately 1.90 even at 200℃, comparable to values observed in films deposited at 350℃. These findings provide a basis for predicting oxidation resistance and optimizing low-temperature conditions, with applications in next-generation semiconductor and packaging technologies requiring high reliability.

Dielectric Properties of High-capacity BME MLCCs via (Na₀.₅Bi₀.₅)TiO₃ as a Rare-Earth-Free Dopant
Change-ho Lee, Jung Rag Yoon
J Electr Electron Mater 2025;38(5):546-553.   Published online September 1, 2025
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JEEM.2025.38.5.10
In this study, the dielectric and electrical properties of high-capacitance base metal electrode (BME) multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) fabricated using a BaTiO₃-MgO-Mn₃O₄-(Na₀.₅Bi₀.₅)TiO₃ (NBT)-(BaCa)SiO₃ dielectric system were investigated under reducing atmospheres with oxygen partial pressures (PO₂) ranging from 10⁻1⁰ to 10⁻12 MPa. By incorporating NBT, the dielectric performance remained stable across the entire range of reducing atmospheres. The fabricated MLCCs exhibited consistent capacitance values, low dielectric loss (<2.8%), and high insulation resistance, reaching up to 2.4 GΩ at 25℃ and 0.675 GΩ at 125℃. Furthermore, excellent breakdown voltage performance (up to 550 V at 25℃) and Class II-compatible temperature coefficient of capacitance (TCC) behavior were observed, meeting the X8R specification. The BaTiO₃-MgO-Mn₃O₄-NBT-(BaCa)SiO₃ dielectric system demonstrates that NBT can serve as a promising alternative to conventional rare-earth dopants in BME MLCCs, enabling excellent thermal and electrical stability, high capacitance, and longterm reliability even under reducing conditions. These results confirm the feasibility of developing cost-effective, sustainable, and rare-earth-free MLCCs for high-performance applications in automotive, industrial, and energy storage systems.

The composite specimens of (1-x)(La0.7Sr0.3)MnO₃-xBaTiO₃ (x = 0.05 ~ 0.3) were synthesized using the conventional solid-state reaction method, and the sintering temperature and time were 1,300℃ and 3 hours, respectively. As a result of observing the structural characteristics, the crystal structure of LSMO-BT solid solution was shown in which the rhombohedral LSMO phase and the tetragonal BT phase were separated and distributed, respectively. And fine grains having relatively small and uniformly distributed grains with sizes ranging from approximately 0.4 to 0.5 μm and pores within the specimens were observed. Notably, variations in the BT content did not significantly affect the grain size or porosity distribution, and a relative density of about 90% or more was shown. The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), and B25/65-value of the 0.7LSMO-0.3BT specimen at room temperature showed the highest values of 1.94 Ω-cm, 0.292 %/℃, and 464 K, respectively. The resistivity behavior of the LSMO-BT composites matched well with the small polaron hopping conduction model.

The solution-based fabrication process for resistive random-access memory (ReRAM) offers several advantages over conventional vapor deposition processes, including simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and high versatility for coating complex structures over large areas. In this study, a TiO₂-based ReRAM device was fabricated using a solution process with Pt top and P++-Si bottom electrodes. The synthesized TiO₂ films contain a residual Cl element as revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Reversible volatile resistance switching was observed due to the formation of conductive Ti-O-Ti networks in the TiO₂ layer. Post-annealing led to an increase in the threshold voltage (Vth). Asymmetric Current-Voltage characteristics was observed due to the different in the work functions of the electrodes. Additionally, the influence of compliance current settings on filament formation and hysteresis behavior was systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that higher compliance currents enhanced the hysteresis width for both positive and negative voltage bias conditions.

In parallel with the efforts to improve the device performance in modern integrated circuits, it is necessary to downscale their core components, field-effect transistors (FETs), generally gauged by their physical gate length. Upon such device scaling, the emergence of the short-channel effect impedes further scaling into the nanometer scale in the silicon VLSI (Very-Large-Scale-Integration) system. To address this issue, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors, leveraging their atomically thin thickness and dangling-bond-free characteristics, are being highlighted as a material solution for future scaling technology without severe mobility degradation. Despite the expected ideal physical properties, 2D semiconductors have yet to realize their full potential owing to the limited development of integration technology. In this context, we survey and review the tailored van der Waals integration technologies for 2D FETs. In particular, we provide an in-depth study of both van der Waals integrated contact and dielectric methods along with an explanation of customized materials. In essence, this van der Waals integrationcentered approach will be a core strategy to implement the high-performance 2D transistors that meet the demand of FET miniaturization.

Change-ho Lee, Jung Rag Yoon
J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2025;38(2):161-166.   Published online March 1, 2025
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.2.5
This study examined the crystallinity and potential of BaTiO₃ powder, prepared by hydrothermal synthesis at 60 nm, as a dielectric material for automotive MLCCs under varying heat treatment temperatures. At temperatures above 850℃, the powder exhibited an orthorhombic structure, with crystallinity and particle size increasing as the temperature rose. In the range of 850~900℃, the powder displayed a uniform particle size distribution and minimal agglomeration, with particles ranging between 150~200 nm. Additionally, it was confirmed that the heat treatment temperature significantly impacts the properties of BaTiO₃ powder, which are critical for the dielectric performance required in X7R MLCCs used in automotive applications. Specifically, high-temperature treatment (above 850℃) was essential for enhancing the powder's crystallinity and forming a stable core-shell structure, which is crucial for achieving stable TCC (Temperature Coefficient of Capacitance) characteristics. It was confirmed that increased crystallinity at temperatures above 850℃ facilitated the development of the core-shell structure through interactions with additives, thereby achieving the necessary characteristics required for highly reliable automotive MLCCs.

DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2025.38.1.9
In this study, the effect of thickness on the Sn-doped β-Ga2O3 thin films was investigated. β-Ga2O3 is a next-generation material for power semiconductors and optoelectronics owing to its remarkable properties, such as an ultra-wide bandgap, excellent thermal and chemical stability, and large breakdown voltage. However, its inherently low conductivity can be limiting in applications that require high conductivity; therefore, improving the conductivity of β-Ga2O3 is important. In this study, Sn-doped β-Ga2O3 thin films with various thicknesses were deposited on β-Ga2O3 substrates. All the fabricated samples exhibited β-phase with a uniform and dense surface and transmittance of above 80% in the visible region. In particular, the 100 nm samples showed the highest carrier concentration and mobility and the lowest resistivity. Thus, these findings are expected to play an important role in improving the performance of devices by controlling the thickness of thin films.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have gained significant attention for their broad applicability in biomedical imaging, soft robotics, and catalysis owing to their exceptional magnetic properties and biocompatibility. A key challenge in maximizing their functionality lies in achieving a uniform size distribution and dispersity, alongside strong interfacial affinity with the surrounding medium that are essential for optimizing magnetic behavior and processibility. In this study, we present a facile solvothermal synthesis of monodisperse iron oxide NPs with tunable size and controllable surface hydrophobicity by varying precursors, capping agents, and solvents. By varying these synthesis parameters, we demonstrate a clear correlation between NP size, dispersity, and key magnetic properties, including saturation magnetization (MS) and coercivity (HC). This advancement in synthesis methodology offers a reliable, efficient approach for producing high-quality iron oxide NPs, which makes possible for practical use of them across a range of technological and biomedical applications.

We investigated the potential of IO:H thin films and hydrogen doping to improve current density and fill factor for enhancing the performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells. We revealed that a transmittance of 86.7% and work function of 5.4 eV could be achieved by injecting 3 sccm of hydrogen gas. The lattice constant of 1.037 nm at the AB site indicates an anion antibonding tendency, and the work function increases as the Fermi level shifts to the valence band. Based on these findings, we fabricated a silicon heterojunction solar cell and achieved an efficiency of 18.53%, while computer simulation confirmed a conversion efficiency of 24.65%, an open-circuit voltage of 724 mV, and a fill factor of 82.72% at a current density of 41.15 mA/㎠.

In this study, the electrical properties of a C0G (class 1 ceramic) dielectric composition with internal reducibility, specifically (Ba0.27CaSr)(Zr0.95Ti0.05)O₃, were investigated by fixing Ba at the A site and varying the Ca/Sr molar ratio. The potential application of this composition in high-permittivity C0G MLCCs was examined. The powder was calcined at 1,150℃ for 2 hours, as determined by TG-DTA analysis, and the resulting powder was ground to achieve a particle size (D50) of 0.35 to 0.4 μm and a specific surface area (BET) of 4.5 to 5.0 g/m². With a Ca/Sr molar ratio of 0.3, the composition (Ba0.27Ca0.17Sr0.56) (Zr0.95Ti0.05)O₃ exhibited electrical properties with a permittivity of 41.9, a loss of less than 0.008%, and an insulation resistance exceeding 2.2×10¹³ Ω. The feasibility of using this composition for high-capacitance C0G MLCCs was confirmed.

Transparent Electrode Characteristics of SnO2/AgNi/SnO2 Multilayer Structures
Min-ho Hwang, Hyun-yong Lee
J Korean Inst Electr Electron Mater Eng 2024;37(5):500-506.   Published online September 1, 2024
DOI: https://doi.org/10.4313/JKEM.2024.37.5.5
The transparent electrode characteristics of the SnO₂/AgNi/SnO₂ (OMO) multilayer structures prepared by sputtering were investigated according to the annealing temperature. Ni-doped Ag of various compositions was selected as the metal layer and heat treatment was performed at 100~300℃ to evaluate the thermal stability of the metals. The manufactured OMO multilayer structures were heat treated for 6 hours at 400~600℃ in an N₂ atmosphere. The structural, electrical, and optical properties of the OMO structures before and after annealing were evaluated and analyzed using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer, 4-point probe, XPS, FE-SEM, etc. OMO with Ni-doped Ag shows improved performance due to the reduction of structural defects of Ag during annealing, but OMO structure with pure Ag shows degradation characteristics due to Ag diffusion into the oxide layer during high-temperature annealing. The figure of merit (FOM) of SnO₂/Ag/SnO₂ was highest at room temperature and gradually decreased as the heat treatment temperature increased. On the other hand, the FOM value of SnO₂/AgNi/SnO₂ mostly showed its maximum value at high temperature(~550℃). In particular, the FOM value of SnO₂/Ag-Ni (3.2 at%)/SnO₂ was estimated to be approximately 2.38×10-2 Ω-1. Compared to transparent electrodes made of other similar materials, the FOM value of the SnO₂/Ag-Ni (3.2 at%)/SnO₂ multilayer structure is competitive and is expected to be used as an alternative transparent conductive electrode in various devices.

Precise control over the morphology of nanostructures is critical for tailoring their physical and chemical properties. This study addresses the challenge of developing a simple, integrated method for synthesizing both 1D and 2D colloidal Cu nanostructures in a single system, achieving successful tuning of their localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties. A facile hydrothermal synthesis utilizing potassium iodide (KI) and hexadecylamine (HDA) is presented for controlling Cu nanostructure morphologies. The key to achieving 1D nanowires (NWs) and 2D nanoplates (NPs) depends on the controlled adsorption of HDA molecules and iodide (I-) ions on specific crystal facets. Depending on the morphologies, the resultant Cu nanostructures exhibit tunable LSPR peaks from 558 nm [nanoplates (NPs)] to 590 nm [nanowires (NWs)]. These results pave the way for the scalable and cost-effective production of plasmonic Cu nanostructures with tunable optical properties, holding promise for applications in sensing, catalysis, and photonic devices.

In line with the development of electronic devices and technologies, the demand for improving ferroelectric materials’ performance is increasing. Since K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN), an eco-friendly ferroelectric material that does not use lead and has a high Curie temperature, it is attracting attention to its usability as a high-temperature dielectric, and various studies are being conducted to increase performance. In a KNN having a perovskite structure, there was a simulation result that the KNN has higher spontaneous polarization when the A-site in which sodium ions exist is replaced with lithium ions. If the simulation results can be proven experimentally, the application range of KNN-based ferroelectric materials will increase. To this end, we tried to manufacture a K1-xLixNbO3 (KLN) with high electrical characteristics by fabricating niobium-deficient and potassium-excessive compositions, which attempt was made to solve the stoichiometry problem by volatilization and suppress secondary phases. If KLN’s secondary phase suppression and relative permittivity improvement are successful, it will contribute to meeting the demand for developing electronic devices.

(Bi1/2Na1/2)TiO3(BNT) piezoelectric ceramics are one of the promising materials that can replace Pb(Zr, Ti)O3(PZT) piezoelectric ceramics due to the high electromechanical strain properties. However, it is still difficult to use practical applications because the required electric field for inducing electromechanical strain is relatively higher than that of PZT ceramics. To overcome this problem, it has been intensively studied on doping impurity or modifying other ABO3 for BNTbased piezoelectric ceramics. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of La2O3 doping on the phase transition behavior and electromechanical strain properties in BNT-SrTiO3 (BNT-ST) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. In the case of the temperaturedependent dielectric properties, it was confirmed that a phase transition from ferroelectrics to relaxors is induced with increasing La2O3 content. As a result, the electromechanical strain properties of BNT-ST ceramics were improved. The highest Smax/Emax value corresponding to 300 pm/V was obtained at 2 mol% La2O3-dopped BNT-ST ceramics. Accordingly, this study successfully demonstrated that La2O3 doping is effective on the inducing phase transition from ferroelectrics to relaxors and the improving electromechanical strain properties of BNT-ST lead-free piezoelectric ceramics.
